Description:This book, begun in 1967, is autobiographical and is based on Chen Qianwu’s own personal experience of being requisitioned as a “Taiwan Special Volunteer” during the war, participating in the Pacific War and being taken captive. Chen tries to use the novel to express his profound thinking on war, human nature, and the value of life. The book is composed of 15 short stories: “Flag Signals,” “Transport Ship,” “Forecasting Death,” “New Troops on the Battlefield,” “Fog,” “ Women Hunting Criminals,” “The Lost Season,” “Survival Instinct,” “Getting Angry,” “Lured by the Night Streets,” “Nostalgia,” “Tacit Agreement,” “The Sight of a Female Soldier,” and “Portrait of the Dead.” In 1999 the title of the book was changed to Returning Alive—Memoir of a Taiwan Special Volunteer.
